Exploring Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: A Vacation Experience
Welcome to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where sandy beaches and a vibrant atmosphere await you. While not initially recognized as a popular destination for LGBTQ travelers, Myrtle Beach offers a range of experiences for everyone to enjoy. Join me on a journey as I recount my recent trip to this beautiful coastal city and discover its diverse attractions, entertainment options, and stunning landscapes.
Discovering Myrtle Beach:
When my parents decided to retire in Myrtle Beach, I was intrigued by the prospect of exploring this southern gem. Known for its favorable tax rates and growing retirement communities, the city offered an inviting atmosphere for a vacation. However, as an LGBTQ individual, I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of gay-friendly establishments and activities.
A Relaxed Approach to Vacation:
For my partner, Bryan, and me, a vacation is all about relaxation and enjoyment. While we appreciate the LGBTQ nightlife scene, we also prioritize finding destinations where we can simply be ourselves without fear of discrimination or drama. Ogunquit, Maine, has been one of our favorite spots for this reason. With this mindset, we embarked on our Myrtle Beach adventure, hoping for a similar experience.
Exploring Myrtle Beach:
While we didn't come across any overt signs of LGBTQ visibility, we were pleasantly surprised by the diverse offerings Myrtle Beach had in store for us. The city's unique charm lies in its ability to cater to both high-end and low-key vacation experiences. From luxurious dining establishments to casual boardwalk eateries, the city offered something for everyone.
Beach Bliss:
One of the highlights of our trip was spending time at Myrtle Beach's pristine shoreline. We had the opportunity to visit three different beaches, each offering a distinct atmosphere. The state park beach provided boardwalk access, making it easily accessible for those with mobility concerns. Additionally, it featured a fishing pier, snack shops, and convenient restroom facilities. The downtown Myrtle Beach area boasted lifeguarded sections, perfect for those seeking added safety while enjoying the sun and surf. Finally, we discovered a hidden gem—a tiny beach tucked away on a side street. Although it lacked lifeguards and facilities, it offered a serene setting and was ideal for a few hours of relaxation.

One evening, we attended the pirate-themed spectacle show produced by the talented Dolly Parton. This unique experience combined elements of a circus, musical theater, and dinner show. With impressive acrobatics, laughter-inducing comedy, and mouthwatering fare, the show left us thoroughly entertained and satisfied. Yes, it might be a little cheesy- but it don't go down easy unless its cheesy! Check out the website for Pirate's Voyage here.

Murrells Inlet: A Culinary Delight:
Our journey wouldn't have been complete without a visit to Murrells Inlet. This area boasts a collection of excellent restaurants, offering delectable seafood, steaks, and a range of international cuisines. The Marsh Walk, a series of well-maintained boardwalks, connected these establishments, creating a vibrant and picturesque dining district. Live music, outdoor bars, and the opportunity to rent jet skis or join boat tours added to the lively ambiance. Check out the website for Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk.
